MAP Toolkit may cause network saturation or machine to reboot

$
0
0

Symptom:

Under some machine and network environments, the MAP Toolkit may cause the network to become saturated with activity and cause the machine running the MAP Toolkit to reboot.

Cause:

The MAP Toolkit has the ability to throttle itself on the machine that it is running on, to prevent the available resources from being fully consumed. The MAP Toolkit does not throttle itself based on the network availability. Therefore, in some cases it is possible for the MAP Toolkit to request more information from the target machines that cannot be handled by the network. When this happens, the network becomes saturated and the machine running MAP may reboot.

We continue to investigate the root cause of this issue. The appears to be in Windows Management Instrument (WMI), a Windows component that is used by the MAP Toolkit when inventorying an environment. A hotfix for Windows looks to help the situation. If applying this hotfix does not help, take a look at the workaround below. If both the hotfix and workaround does not help, please contact us at mapfdbk@microsoft.com, so we can investigate the issue with you.

Workaround:

You can use the method below to throttle the MAP Toolkit further to use less system and network resources. If this workaround does not solve the problem, please email us at the address provided in the support section.

  1. Shutdown MAP if it is running/li>
  2. Edit the %Program Files%\Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit\bin\Microsoft.AssessmentPlatform.UI.Console.exe.config file and add the following lines into the “<appSettings>” section. These values in the first and second lines can be adjusted up or down as needed to maximize the performance while maintaining system stability, but these values must be greater than 3.

Edit: As of MAP 9.0, the file name has changed to MapToolkit.exe.config

<add key="Microsoft.AssessmentPlatform.InventoryEngine.InventoryService.DefaultMaxThreadsX86" value="52" />
<add key="Microsoft.AssessmentPlatform.InventoryEngine.InventoryService.DefaultMaxThreads" value="52" />
<add key="Microsoft.AssessmentPlatform.InventoryEngine.InventoryService.DefaultMinThreads" value="3" />
<add key="Microsoft.AssessmentPlatform.InventoryEngine.InventoryService.MaxThreadsLowerBound" value="2" />

NOTES:

  • The first two lines will set the maximum number of machines to inventory at the same time. You can adjust the maximum value up or down as needed to maximize the performance while maintaining system stability, but these values must be greater than 3. Changing these values may increase the inventory time.
  • The third line sets the minimum number of threads that MAP will use, changing this value is NOT recommended.

The Windows Volume Licensing Feature in the MAP Toolkit

Windows client operating systems are available to customers in multiple ways – Volume Licensing; OEM; and Retail channels. Windows licenses acquired through these channels are subject to specific terms and conditions, which outline how customers can deploy, upgrade or use Windows. Typically, enterprise customers purchase computers from OEMs with or without a version of Windows and purchase Windows Enterprise edition licenses through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program.

A Windows Enterprise edition license that is acquired through the Volume Licensing Program is an upgrade license, so it must be deployed on a computer that already has a qualifying OEM installed Windows client operating system with a valid license. If this is not done, customers will end up in either a mislicensed or misversioned condition, which is a violation of the terms and conditions defined in Volume Licensing Program.

Defining the terms

A mislicensed computer is any computer currently using a Windows Volume License but that computer did not ship with an OEM-installed version of Windows.

A misversioned computer is a computer currently using a Windows Volume License but that computer did not ship with a qualifying OEM-installed version of Windows that qualifies for a Windows Volume License upgrade. (Windows 8 and newer only; Windows 7 and prior have a physical Certificate of Authenticity (COA) that cannot be detected by MAP)

To put this another way, MAP needs to know 2 elements, whether or not the computer shipped from the OEM with Windows installed and if it did, that the Windows edition that was installed is one that is allowed to be upgraded to Enterprise edition.

The ability for MAP to determine if an OEM installed Windows on a computer started with Windows Vista SP1. However, the capability for MAP to determine the edition wasn’t available until Windows 8 was released. For this reason, any machines that are running Windows Vista SP1 or Windows 7 that are categorized as “Licensed” (i.e. not “mislicensed”) still need to have their CoA sticker checked to verify that the edition installed is one that qualifies for upgrade to Enterprise. For Windows Vista, this would be the Business and Ultimate editions and for Windows 7 it is the Professional and Ultimate editions.

Getting the Data

For this feature, a new option has been added to the list of Inventory Scenarios in the Inventory Wizard, so you will want to choose both:

  • Windows computers
  • Windows Volume Licensing

MAP will conduct a general inventory of the environment and for any qualifying client operating systems that are discovered, MAP will use WMI and PowerShell queries to obtain the information needed for the reports. For details on how to prepare your environment for a successful WMI and PowerShell connection, see these TechNet Wiki articles:

The Report

Here is a brief explanation of the report which contains 2 worksheets:

  1. Microsoft Volume Licensing Assessment for Windows Summary – This worksheet provides a summary of the Volume Licensing Assessment for computers running Windows client operating systems.
  2. Microsoft Volume Licensing Assessment for Windows Details – This worksheet provides details about the Volume Licensing Assessment for computers running Windows client operating systems.

We are pleased to announce the availability of version 9.1 of the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit. This release of the MAP Toolkit helps increase the agility and cost effectiveness of deploying the latest Microsoft technologies. MAP 9.1 helps organizations assess their environment readiness for Windows 8.1 and Office 365, track usage of Windows Server 2012 R2, Lync Server 2013, SharePoint Server 2013, Exchange Server 2013, System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2, and SQL Server 2014.  It also helps assess migrations from on-premises to Azure.

Discovery of Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

MAP 9.1 adds the discovery and reporting of Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. With the addition of Hyper-V to the Windows client OS in Windows 8, MAP will now correctly report the virtualization technology and hypervisor version.

Windows Server 2012 R2 as a platform for server virtualization

When using MAP to plan your server consolidation/virtualization project, you can now specify Windows Server 2012 R2 as the virtual machine host platform.

Improved SQL Server Discovery

In this version of MAP we expanded the discovery of SQL Server to include components installed independent from the database engine. For example, instances of stand-alone SQL Server Reporting Services will now be included in the MAP SQL Discovery report. MAP 9.1 also adds discovery of the Data Quality Services and Master Data Services which were added in SQL Server 2012. Finally, MAP 9.1 includes the discovery of SQL Server 2014 as well as the collection of UAL data for SQL Server 2014.
